Frequently Asked Questions about Renewable Energy: Hot Water Upgrades

Solar hot water systems are made up of flat solar collectors or evacuated tubes and a storage tank which may be installed on the roof or at ground level. As the collectors heat up with the sun's rays, water is heated by circulating from the tank through the collector.
Heat Pump Water Heaters are very energy efficient and use much less energy than a conventional electric system, some models can use only 1/4 the energy to heat the same amount of water. They use a refrigeration cycle to extract heat from the air to heat the water, like your fridge operating in reverse. Your fridge "pumps" heat out of the fridge to the room to keep your food cold, a heat pump water heater "pumps" heat from the environment into the water to heat it up. As it is moving heat from one place to another, rather than turning electricity into heat, it can use much less energy.
Like many things in life, this depends on our situation. Do you have mains gas connection? Do you have excess solar generation from panels on your roof? Where is the system located at your house? For electric hot water systems, the most efficient option is a heat pump water heater, these can have Coefficient of Performance (COP) of up to 4, meaning that for each unit of electricity you can utilise 4 units of heat for your water. If coupled with excess solar generation during the day this is high-efficiency option. Solar hot water systems have very low operating costs and if you live in a suitable climate. If you are considering a gas system, a condensing system is more efficient, talk to your plumber if an instantaneous or storage system is best for your needs. Also, consider if the system is the right size for your needs, insulate your hot water pipes, and placing your hot water systems as close as possible to where the hot water will be used.
